Four Day Intensive Buddhist Studies Course with Khenpo Tsering, August 17 – 20, 2018

The San Luis Obispo Bodhi Path Center is pleased to host Khenpo Tsering Samdup again for a 4-day intensive Buddhist Studies course, covering texts by Maitreya and others, from August 17-20, 2018. Bring your pen, notebooks, and copies of the texts!

This program is not geared towards beginners but rather toward students with some background in Buddhist philosophy. If you are not sure if this course is for you, you are welcome to try the first session(s) before committing to the full program.

The course will use two of Maitreya’s Five Teachings to provide an “analysis of how ordinary confused consciousness can be transformed into wisdom,“ and how we should understand Buddha Nature, the “ground of enlightenment… and the nature and qualities of Buddhahood.”  We will also begin studying volume one of Mipham Rinpoche’s Gateway to Knowledge, a condensation of the Buddha’s teachings, “the philosophical backbone of the living tradition of Tibettan Buddhism”.

Daily schedule

8:30-10:30: Gateway to Knowledge, Chapter 1

11:00-2:00 (12-1 PM lunch break): Maitreya’s Distinguishing Phenomena and Pure Being Pure-Being/dp/1 559392150

2:30-4:30: Buddha Nature, starting chapter 2; 559391286

Students are encouraged to obtain the books for the course. Other purchase options can be found at, including used copies. Photocopies of the root text verses without commentary will likely be available.

Appreciated for his warmth, openness, delightful sense of humor, and depth of knowledge, Khenpo Tsering teaches at the Karmapa International Buddhist Institute (KIBI) in New Delhi. For the past 10 years, Khenpo has taught Buddhist philosophy at numerous centers throughout Southeast Asia, Europe, the US and South America.

In his teens Khenpo moved to Rumtek Monastery, the seat of the Karma Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism in Sikkim, India and began spiritual training as a monk. He had a rigorous education in all the major texts of Buddhist philosophy, Tibetan literature, grammar, and history at Rumtek’s monk college at the Shri Nalanda Institute for Higher Buddhist Studies. In 1992, he was awarded the ‘Khenpo’ degree (equivalent to a PhD) and has been teaching the Dharma ever since.
